St Ives Art Galleries – Beautiful, Original Works Of Art
St Ives town is full of amazing little art galleries. I’m not including the Tate St Ives or the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture museum in this post, as they get one all to themselves.
Here, I’m talking about all the small, independent galleries. The ones you can wander around, browse the lovely art work, and possible purchase a piece to treasure.
My list of art galleries isn’t complete. I’ve added the ones I know well – if there are any that aren’t on the list that you would like added, send me a message. I will be happy to check them out!
St Ives Society Of Artists
Located in The Mariners’ Church, the St Ives Society Of Artists is a wonderful gallery to browse and shop. It features works chosen by guest curators and invited exhibitions, that are a diverse mix of contemporary visual art.
The Penwith Art Gallery
The Penwith Art Gallery is located in an old pilchard packing factory on Back Road West in St Ives. It is the home of the Penwith Society Of Arts In Cornwall. The society was founded in 1949 by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Bernard Leach, Sven Berlin and Wilhelmina Barns– Graham, amongst others. Later members have included Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Henry Moore (honorary member).
The gallery includes 3 public galleries, a sculpture area, artist studios and an archive.
The Blue Bramble Gallery
The Blue Bramble Gallery is found next to Olives cafe on the Island Square in Downalong, St Ives. It is a really quirky and interesting gallery featuring a really eclectic mix of local artists work.
Porthminster Gallery is the lovely gallery on the corner of Lambeth Walk, overlooking St Ives Harbour. The building used to be a pilchard warehouse and is full of character. It features collections of paintings, original prints, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery by well-established and emerging British artists, alongside investment artworks by collectable St Ives and Modern British names.
Harbour Galleries is right on Wharf Road overlooking the harbour. It is an arcade of 7 shops run by local artists and craftspeople. There is lots of work for sale displayed on the walls, and you can watch the artists work in their studios.
St Ives Gallery
St Ives Gallery is a lovely little gallery at the top of Tregenna Hill. The main artist is Greg Hill who paints lovely views of St Ives, primarily in watercolours. Work by Gray Smith, the photographer is also displayed – look for the lovely photographs of sunsets!
If you love contemporary modern art, you must visit Anima-Mundi. Located near The Guildhall on Street-an-Pol in St Ives, Anima-Mundi represents artists such a Sax impey, Steve Goddard and Joy Woldenden Brown.
Art Space Gallery
Art Space Gallery is one of my favourite galleries. It is a collective of seven artists, each producing beautiful but affordable art. It is located right on the harbour, overlooking the beach.
Alexandra Dickens Gallery
The Alexandra Dickens Gallery is tucked away on Back Road West in St Ives. Her work is beautifully vibrant and abstract, so full of colour and movement.
The Belgrave Gallery is the lovely one on Fore Street. I’m forever peering in their windows to admire the exhibitions. They showcase modern British and Contemporary Art works with an emphasis on artists associated with Cornwall.
Which is your favourite art gallery in St Ives? Have I not included your favourite? Let me know and I will add it to the list!
